PokéSurvivor Buff Moves: Limits, Stacks and Choices

Why the third buff stops appearing
A November 4 player question asks why Magnezone never gets Agility, Harden and Nasty Plot together. The checked level-up logic counts buff moves in the player's learned-move list. At two, other new buff moves are excluded from that candidate pool.
It is not just a count of occupied slots or currently active buffs. A Bond changes which moves share a slot; it does not remove the learned moves from this count. Rerolling cannot make an excluded third buff eligible.
Before diagnosing a missing choice, check both the two-buff limit and the other requirements: whether there is a free slot, whether the move is already learned, whether it is banned, and whether it belongs to that partner's available pool. An eligible move is still a random choice, not a guaranteed next card.
Six buff moves, different jobs
| Move | What it builds while active | What to distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Swords Dance | Physical Attack | Supports physical damaging moves |
| Nasty Plot | Special Attack | Supports special damaging moves |
| Dragon Dance | Physical Attack | Shares the physical-attack buff channel with Swords Dance |
| Agility | Movement speed | Does not replace an aimed dash or remove Judgment's speed soft cap |
| Harden | Damage reduction | Not a direct increase to both base Defense stats |
| Aqua Ring | Health regeneration | Healing over time does not guarantee survival against a large hit |
Check the move's category before choosing an attack buff. A Dragon-type damaging move can be special; Dragon Dance's name does not make it a boost to every Dragon move. Use the physical and special guide for category matching.
Two buff moves is not two stacks
There are several separate limits:
- Learned buff moves: the two-move rule above controls new level-up choices.
- Buff stacks: each cast can build an effect up to that move's current stack limit.
- In-run stat cards: these are separate rewards with their own limits and evolution uses.
- Permanent upgrades, held items and abilities: these are other systems, not additional learned buff moves.
Buff upgrades can change potency, duration and stack limits. Do not treat a level-one value, an old screenshot or an Armor-card limit as a universal limit for every level and source.
Must I keep the buff selected?
Learning a buff does not make it permanently active. The checked game casts the selected slot's group. A buff in that group can refresh its effect; when you switch away, an existing effect can remain until its duration expires. Once the timer runs out, its stacks are cleared.
For an editorial example, suppose Slot A contains an attack and Nasty Plot, while Slot B contains a separate attack. Selecting A lets the buff cast with that group. Switching to B does not establish permanent Nasty Plot uptime: check the displayed effect and remaining duration before assuming it still helps.
This is a mechanics example, not a measured build. It does not assume every linked move has the same cooldown. A held item that prevents switching is another reason to check your actual setup.
Do Swords Dance and Dragon Dance stack separately?
Both use the same physical-attack buff channel in the checked bundle. They are not two independent multipliers that you can multiply together. The shared channel also handles refreshes and stronger existing effects. Choosing both spends both learned-buff choices; it does not create two separate physical-attack bonuses.
For a special-attack plan, first check whether Nasty Plot matches the damaging moves you actually use. Mixed physical/special groups need a different decision from an all-special group; this page does not claim one universal best pair.
Does Harden raise both defenses?
The checked implementation puts Harden into a general damage-reduction contribution. The incoming-hit calculation also handles the relevant base defensive stat separately. Calling Harden “double Defense and Special Defense” would confuse those layers.
Harden is therefore relevant beyond a physical-only label, but it is not immunity, a flat addition to both Pokédex stats, or a reason to ignore large hits. This guide does not model every special damage source or calculate your final mitigation.
Choose support before the next run
- Identify the physical or special attacks you want to use.
- Decide what is failing: damage, movement, taking hits, or recovery.
- Choose up to two buff moves for that plan, leaving space for damaging moves.
- Check how the selected group maintains those effects, rather than only checking what you learned.
- For the 30-minute stage, read Judgment's speed and item limits. The developer describes a speed soft cap there; that does not prove Agility or Choice Scarf is universally useless.
Our calculators do not simulate temporary buffs, rotations, Bond groups or survival time. Use this checklist to inspect the game, not as a prediction of a clear.
